Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has released valuable guidance for students who dream of starting their studies in 2026. The main tip is simple: apply your visa three months in advance of the intended travel date to increase your chances of approval on time.

Critical period is approaching: October 2025 to March 2026

Immigration New Zealand warned about the period of increased demand for student visas. Between October 2025 and March 2026, the volume of applications increases significantly due to the local academic calendar.

During this time, processing times tend to be longer. Therefore, the official recommendation is clear: apply at least 3 months before the desired travel date.

Why is this timing crucial?

  • Avoid delays that may jeopardize the start of studies
  • Reduces anxiety during the process
  • It allows for better financial planning
  • Offers time for possible adjustments to the documentation

Similar to what happens with other destinations, as we explained in our guide about What happens if my student visa is denied, early preparation is always the best strategy.

Game-changing news: 25 hours of work

As of November 3, 2025, a change takes effect. International students will be able to work up to 25 hours per week during the term of office, an increase from the current 20 hours.

What does this mean in practice?

Before:

  • 20 hours of work per week
  • Approximately NZ$ 400-500 weekly

Then:

  • 25 working hours per week
  • Approximately NZ$ 500-625 weekly

This change represents about an additional NZ$ 2,400 per year. For many students, this extra income can cover:

  • Partial accommodation costs
  • Full monthly food
  • Leisure activities and internal trips
  • Emergency reserve

As we highlighted in our article about 10 fun facts about studying and working in New Zealand, the country offers excellent opportunities to balance studies and work.

Early approval: an advantage for planners

Students who apply 6 months or more in advance can receive an “approval in principle”. This mechanism allows:

  • Confirm enrollment at institutions
  • Organize financial transfers
  • Plan monthly payment
  • Reduce process anxiety

Unlike what we see in other destinations, New Zealand offers that added flexibility. While some countries have stricter processes, as we detailed in Australian visa step by step, New Zealand shows greater adaptability.

Essential Documentation: Prepare Adequately

To avoid delays or refusals, keep these documents organized:

Academic documents:

  • Translated school transcript
  • Certificates of English proficiency
  • Letter of acceptance from the institution

Financial evidence:

  • Bank statements for the last 3 months
  • Sponsorship letter (if applicable)
  • Proof of payment of school fees

Personal documents:

  • Passport valid for at least 18 months
  • Photos in the New Zealand standard
  • Specific medical tests

It is worth remembering that inadequate documentary preparation is one of the main causes of negativity. Situation similar to what we explained about student visa extension, where the correct documentation makes all the difference.

Global trends impact student visas

The international visa scene is constantly evolving. As we saw in American visa changes in 2025, countries adjust their policies regularly.

New Zealand demonstrates a progressive approach when increasing allowable working hours. This decision reflects:

  • Need for skilled labor
  • Recognition of the contribution of international students
  • Competitiveness in the global education market
  • Supporting students' financial sustainability

Sectors with the highest demand for students

New Zealand has a grace period in several areas, creating opportunities for international students:

Technology and IT: Programming, data analysis, cybersecurity
Hospitality: Hospitality, tourism, gastronomy
Health: Nursing, physical therapy, geriatric care
Construction: Carpentry, electricity, plumbing
Agriculture: Sustainable agriculture, horticulture, viticulture

These sectors not only provide part-time work opportunities during studies, but also paths to permanent residence in the future.
