Doing an exchange and living outside the country are incredible experiences that can transform my life. However, for everything to go as smoothly as possible, I realized that it is essential to have self-knowledge and to carry out good planning. One of the main questions I had was choosing between going to college or taking a language course abroad. In this article, I share with you the reflections that helped me make the right decision.

Self-knowledge and planning

Before choosing between college and language course, I understood that I needed to reflect on my short and medium-term objectives in relation to the exchange experience. To do this, I answered the following questions:

  • How long do I want to live abroad?
  • What is my purpose with the exchange? Learn/improve a language? Immigrate? Boost my resume to have more chances in the labor market in my country?
  • Do I need to work while studying?
  • How much do I have to invest?
  • What is my level in the language I want to study?

In answering these questions, I had a solid basis for evaluating the pros and cons of the college and the language course.

College abroad: pros and cons

Fazer University abroad, adds a lot of value to my resume and can put me ahead of other candidates during a selection process. In addition, I will have access to quality education and, depending on the country chosen, I will be able to work while I study and even remain in the country for a period after graduation.

However, it is important to remember that to attend college abroad, it is generally necessary to prove fluency in the language, since classes are held in the local language. In addition, the courses are usually longer, ranging from 2 to 4 years on average. Another issue to consider is investment, as higher education courses abroad may be more expensive than language courses.

Language course abroad: advantages and disadvantages

If my primary goal is Learn a language abroad, taking a language course abroad is the best choice. These courses are suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced, and can have a variable duration, starting from 2 weeks. In addition, the price of a language course is often more affordable than that of a college.

However, it is important to remember that, in order to get the most out of it, the longer I can stay abroad, the better my development and evolution will be in learning the language. If my language level is already advanced, a language course may not be as challenging, and it is more interesting to choose a college or a specific course, such as business English.

How to choose between college and language course

To make the best decision, I considered my objectives, language level, time availability, and budget. If my focus is on a longer experience, with the possibility of employment and immigration, and I am already fluent in the language, college may be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if my main objective is to learn or improve the language, I have a more limited budget and less time available, a language course is the most appropriate option.
