Pet design in Milan gives your child two weeks to design and build an object for an animal, for ages 15 to 18, with classes in English. In 2027, with The HAD studio, the residential session runs from 4 to 17 July and the day session from 5 to 16 July.
What does the workshop involve over these two weeks?
Your child does not start drawing in the first hour. They start by watching the animal: how it moves, where it rests, what bothers it and how it plays. This approach is called ethology, the study of behaviour. An object that ignores this is no use, even if it photographs well.
The two weeks follow this order:
- Observe. Behaviour comes before the sketchbook.
- Sketch. The design grows from how the object will be used. When the height, opening or material does not work, the piece goes back onto paper. That revision is the lesson.
- Build. In the final days, there is a real object to hold. Your child explains, in English, why it has that shape.
The HAD leads the workshop. The studio considers the person and the animal within the same project. Two weeks are enough for one product, with revisions along the way. They are not enough for a brand, a shop or a collection.
English is used in the classroom and to explain the design choices, rather than in a separate lesson. We do not require an exam score before departure. Your child needs to follow feedback and respond. Visits, materials and a certificate of completion are included. The certificate records participation. The piece is what the family sees when their child returns.
Fashion, design and pet design: what is the family choosing?
In Milan, several creative summer programmes appear in the same search. What changes is who your child designs for.
At the fashion summer camp in Italy, the work focuses on clothing, image and collections. At the design summer camp in Milan, the options are broader, and animals are not the focus. At the automotive design summer camp, your child designs vehicles.
NABA summer courses are offered by another school, also in design and fashion. Pet design is not a week within those courses. It is a separate group, with The HAD, for those who want to make an object an animal will use.

Residential or day attendance?
Both formats follow the same workshop. What changes is where your child sleeps.
- Residential, from 4 to 17 July 2027. Your child stays with the group, eats with the group and does not cross Milan alone at night. Meals and accommodation are included. This is the option for those coming from another country.
- Day attendance only, from 5 to 16 July 2027. Your child attends the workshop and returns to the home the family has arranged. The day option does not include accommodation. It suits those already in Milan.
The age range, English, The HAD and the certificate are the same for both.
Does pet design replace veterinary medicine or zoology?
No. Veterinary medicine looks after animal health and requires a different length of study. The zoology and animal biology summer camp in England observes animals as living beings through fieldwork.
Pet design uses behaviour to guide designing and building. Your child can have both interests and explore them in different summers. For a single July, the family chooses one. Their affection for animals remains. The workshop adds an object with a purpose to that affection.
What should the family check before moving forward?
These are the basics for deciding whether the workshop fits, before booking a flight.
- Age, between 15 and 18. A younger sibling, even one who draws well, cannot join this group.
- Which July dates: residential or day attendance only
- Something they do at home: explaining how an animal uses an object, and changing the design when it does not work in use
- Enough English to follow feedback and respond
